Smart home devices are not that popular in Kenya but ITB Connect wants to change that. The company sells its devices through Jumia and at the moment has a smart video doorbell (available for Ksh 7,999) and a smart dash cam (also available for Ksh 7,999). As we are moving towards a connected world, these devices will play a big role in our lives depending on what we want and how we plan to use them. In this post, I will be looking at the ITB Connect smart video doorbell to see what it has to offer and if it…

Huawei has unveiled its new flagship series range, the Huawei P30 series. The company unveiled this new series yesterday at an event in Paris. This new series is made up of the Huawei P30 and the P30 Pro smartphones which come with some powerful features we did not see on their predecessors, the P20 and the P20 Pro. The Huawei P30 and P30 Pro are all about the cameras and a new design which expands the edges of the OLED display while minimizing the presence of the front facing camera notch. The phones also come with in-screen optical fingerprint sensors,…
It is not doubt that WhatsApp acts like the perfect catalyst for the spread of fake news. Other social networking sites have a role in the spread of fake news but WhatsApp is out of control. I can remember how the platfomr was used to spread fake news in 2017 (elections period). Most people would copy paste messages from questionable news sources or just forward them as received without confirming their authenticity. WhatsApp even introduced a feature to label messages that are forwarded but this did not help fight the spread of fake news. With the pressure that was on…
About a week ago, Huawei unveiled its latest smartphone, the Huawei Y6 Prime 2019, to the Kenyan market. This smartphone is available in retail stores for Ksh 13,499 making it the cheapest smartphone unveiled by the company this year. I have already published my first impressions post on this phone and you can check that out here. With the Y6 Prime 2019, the company is going after a market segment dominated by Infinix and Tecno. The phone is targeting the young customers who want the latest features on their smartphones without spending so much money on the said smartphone. This…
If you have always wanted the Xiaomi Redmi 6A, you can get it on Jumia for as low as Ksh 7,999. I am not sure how long it has been available at this price but I got a link from a friend who wanted to confirm if it was genuine or not. The Xiaomi Redmi 6A variant available at this price is the 2GB RAM model with 16GB of internal storage space. The 3GB model is not listed on the e-commerce website but I still think Ksh 8,000 is a good deal for the 2GB model. Even though this is…
Opera for Android version 51 will finally bring free and unlimited VPN service to mobile users. Unlimited VPN has been available on its desktop browser for almost two years and it looks like those using its Android browser will be getting the same treatment. According to Opera, “There are already more than 650 million people using VPN services globally.” The company says that with its VPN service, users can enjoy free and no-log service that enhances online privacy and improves security. Opera claims that users should expect better control over their online privacy and this will be important when connecting…
The Infinix Hot 7 went on sale in Kenya this week through the Infinixmall, Jumia and through offline retail stores. This is the first smartphone from the company to be launched in the country this year as the Zero 6 Pro was announced but is not easy to find. The Infinix Hot 7 is available in two versions, a 1GB RAM option with 16GB of internal storage space and a 2GB RAM option with 32GB of internal storage space. The 1GB RAM model is an Android Go variant that is available for Ksh 9,999 while the 2GB RAM model…
Last year, the TECNO Spark 2 was one of my favorite smartphone under Ksh 15,000. With its updated design, bigger display and impressive cameras, the Spark 2 provided an experience you would not easily get from the other smartphones within its price range. The Spark series is the company’s best-selling series and having used the Spark 2, it is clear why this is the case. In 2019, TECNO will be updating this series with the launch of the Spark 3 Pro. The launch is expected to happen later this month or early next month in Kenya. Nothing much is known…
Another week, another Android Pie update from HMD Global. This latest update is rolling out to the Nokia 5.1 which you can get in Kenya for as low as Ksh 17,000 on Masoko. The phone has been available in the country since late last year and is part of Nokia’s growing mid-range family. The Nokia 5.1 gets Android Pie update that comes less than a week after the company pushed it out to one of its other smartphone, the Nokia 3.1. At this point, HMD Global seems to be the only serious company when it comes to pushing out Android…
