HMD Global has always been clear that most of the Nokia smartphones it brings to the market will get at least one major Android update. Since these new Nokia smartphones come with stock Android, it is easier to push out the latest updates in time compared to other manufacturers. For Android Pie, HMD Global is yet to push out the update to most of its existing devices but the company has plans to do that in the next couple of months. So far, only five phones have received Android Pie which was officially announced by Google back in August 2018.…

Last year, Twitter started testing out a new interface for the web. This new interface was to bring some new features including Explore and Bookmarks to the web. At the time, the company was still testing it out and months later it is giving more users access to this new design. I got the notification to opt-in for access to this new design a couple of weeks back and I thought it was available to all users. Well, I finally learnt that this new web interface was available to select users and only now is Twitter is rolling it out…
WhatsApp is one of the biggest platforms used to spread fake news. Most people tend to forward messages without thinking twice. If you are forwarding memes or funny videos, this does no harm but the same cannot be said when comes to sensitive stories that have not been confirmed or just fake news in general. WhatsApp knows that allowing people to forward messages helps the spread of fake news to some extent. This is why the company is planning to limit the number of times users can forward any single message. With these changes, the limit will be set at…
Earlier today, Huawei introduced its latest flagship phablets, the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro in Kenya. These two phones were unveiled to a global audience late last year and they have finally made their way to Kenya. The Mate 20 Pro is the one that stands out for me and will be available in Kenya for Ksh 99,999. The standard Mate 20 will be available for Ksh 75,000. I don’t know about you but these prices are reasonable compared to what is available on the market. The Mate 20 pro for starters is available at the same price…
Samsung has cracked the premium smartphone segment but the company is still struggling with the entry level sector. The company has some good high-end phones but the same cannot be said about its entry level phones. Some of them are just bad and even a device such as the Galaxy Grand Prime Pro 2018 that I reviewed last year is good but does not compete with some of the other phones offered by some of the popular Chinese manufacturers we have in the country. Samsung hopes things might change a bit and it will gain significant market share this year.…
The Infinix Hot 6X just had its price reduced on the company’s own ecommerce platform, Infinixmall. The phone is now available through the ecommerce platform for Ksh 14,799. This is for the 3GB version, there is a 2GB version that is available for Ksh 12,699. Infinix says that it has reduced the price from Ksh 21,999 but that is a bit of a stretch as the highest price I have seen this phone sell for is Ksh 16,300 on Jumia. Either way, the price reduction might be appealing for those who have been eyeing this phone as they are able…
Netflix is undoubtedly a force to reckon with in the streaming industry. The platform has seen tremendous growth over the years expanding to almost all countries across the world. In 2018, the video streaming giant had a very good year if the latest figures are anything to go by. The company has announced that it gained 8.8 million subscribers during the last quarter of 2018. I am happy to say I am among these 8.8 million new subscribers after signing up for Netflix after months of putting it off. The 8.8 million new subscribers exceed the 7.6 million subscribers the…
Google has announced that it plans to deprecate 32-bit only Android applications later this year. The company has said that developers should ensure their apps meet its 64-bit requirements by August this year. In a statement, the search giant said, “64-bit CPUs deliver faster, richer experiences for your users. Adding a 64-bit version of your app provides performance improvements, makes way for future innovation, and sets you up for devices with 64-bit only hardware. The developer deadline is 1 August 2019. The company will not accept new apps or app updates that include native code and do not support 64-bit…
Telkom Kenya plans to use Ksh 1 billion to expand and optimize its 3G and 4G network in the country. The company said this a couple of days back revealing that the network roll-out will lead to improvements in mobile connectivity as well as boosting the quality of services to customers. Telkom Kenya has 4G coverage in most parts on Nairobi but it still has a long way to go when compared to Safaricom which has a strong 4G presence in the city and across the country. For Telkom, it’s better to be late than never show up as consumers…
mySafaricom App has just been updated to add Fuliza submenu for those who want to use this new service. Fuliza M-Pesa is an overdraft service that allows M-Pesa customers to complete M-Pesa transaction even when they have insufficient funds in their accounts. This is not a loan facility but rather is a service that lets you send money or complete a Lipa na M-Pesa (Buy goods and Pay bill) transaction even when you have insufficient funds. When Fuliza went live, the submenu was missing from mySafaricom app but it has now been added with the latest update. The submenu is…
