Vivo is planning to launch yet another smartphone into the Kenyan market in the coming week. This new phone, the vivo Y30, is part of the company’s Y series meant for the youth and joins the vivo V19 that was launched in Kenya recently. Being part of vivo’s Y series, the Y30 should be cheaper than the V19. The phone should retail for between Ksh 20,000 and Ksh 25,000 which puts it on the firing range of the Huawei Y8p, Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S and a few other phones we have seen in 2020. This is a very competitive segment…

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 is one of the handful of devices in the company’s Redmi Note 9 series. The phone is priced at Ksh 19,000 on Jumia. At this price, it is competing with the Samsung Galaxy A21s and the Infinix Note 7. Does the Redmi Note 9 have any chance? This is what we will find out in this review. For those interested in what you will be getting in the box if you buy this phone, you can check out that post that I did a few weeks back. Read: Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Unboxing Before we…

I have been using the Tecno Pouvoir 4 for a little over two weeks as my secondary phone. This is one of the latest devices from Tecno and is available in Kenya for Ksh 14,000. This is slightly higher when compared to its predecessor, the Tecno Pouvoir 3 that is currently available for less than Ksh 9,000. Tecno has added a number of new features to the Pouvoir 4 and that may be one of the justifications for the price hike. The Tecno Pouvoir 4 comes with a 7-inch display, 6,000 mAh battery, dedicated Google Assistant button, Quad camera…
Samsung officially unveiled its latest flagship devices, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and the Note 20 Ultra. These are its premium devices and join the S20 series that was unveiled earlier this year. Those who want to be among the first ones in Kenya to own these new devices will be able to pre-order them as from next week (14th August). The pre-order period will go all the way to August 28 with the devices available in stores locally on August 30, 2020. As for pricing, the base model Samsung Galaxy Note 10 should be available for Ksh 107,000 while…
We had known they were coming and today Samsung officially unveiled them. These are its new flagship devices and are two out of five devices the company announced today. These two devices, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, are not that different from the Note devices from last year. They are both very big devices with the Note 20 Ultra having a slightly bigger display. The Galaxy Note phones have always been geared towards power users and the Note 20 series is not any different. Both the standard Note 20 and the Note 10 Ultra have a…
Telkom Kenya and Airtel have been in talks that if were successful, could have seen the two telcos merge operations in Kenya. We first heard of these talks last year but nothing substantial ever came out of that. Fast forward to August 2020 and Telkom and Airtel have announced that they have called off the merger talks. The decision was mutual and is based on the challenges experienced in getting all the approvals required to complete the transaction. The companies did not go into the specifics at this point and that is something we will know at a future date.…
Realme has today officially entered the Kenyan market with the launch of the realme C3 that those interested can get in the country for Ksh 14,000. Realme started off as a sub-brand under OPPO but now sort of operates as an independent smartphone brand. The company has been doing well in some Asian countries and is now officially entering the Kenyan market with the C3 phone. This is quite an impressive launch as pricing the phone at Ksh 14,000 will definitely work in their advantage. Just like its cousin OPPO, realme will be targeting the youth market and the C3…
A few weeks ago, Safaricom announced the availability of the Ematic 4K Android TV box in Kenya that acts as the successor to the Safaricom Digital TV and Internet box from 2018. This digital TV and internet box was good but is dated now and struggles to compete with most of the new Android TV boxes we see on the market. Unlike its predecessor, this new Android TV box has no Safaricom branding and it looks like Safaricom is just its main distributor in Kenya. You can get it from Masoko for Ksh 6,900 which is reasonable if you ask…
Netflix is making some changes to its Android app this weekend. This latest change will let users choose the playback speeds of whatever they are watching. Users will be able to choose between 0.5x, 0.75x, 1.25x, and 1.5x in addition to the current 1x speeds. The normal, 1x speeds, will remain the default speeds for users and those who want to play their videos faster or slower will have the option of doing so. Other video on demand services like YouTube have different playback speeds and Netflix is just catching up. YouTube has more playback options but the ones on…
