1. About This Policy
TechArena is an independent technology media publication covering technology, startups, innovation, digital transformation, enterprise technology, fintech and related developments across Kenya, East Africa and Africa.
This Editorial Policy sets out the principles and standards that guide our journalism and editorial decision-making.
Our goal is to provide accurate, useful, timely and independent technology journalism while maintaining the trust of our readers, sources, partners and wider technology community.
2. Editorial Independence
TechArena’s editorial decisions are independent of advertisers, sponsors, commercial partners and other organisations that work with us.
Commercial relationships do not guarantee:
- Positive coverage
- Publication of a particular story
- Editorial approval of marketing claims
- The removal of legitimate criticism
- Favourable treatment in editorial coverage
Advertisers and sponsors may purchase advertising, sponsored content or other clearly identified commercial services. These arrangements do not give them control over independent editorial coverage.
Where a commercial relationship could reasonably create a conflict of interest, we will seek to disclose it appropriately.
3. Accuracy
Accuracy is one of TechArena’s core editorial principles.
Before publication, journalists and contributors should make reasonable efforts to:
- Verify important facts
- Attribute information to its original source
- Check names, titles, organisations, dates, figures and quotations
- Distinguish facts from opinions, analysis and speculation
- Provide relevant context
- Avoid presenting unverified claims as established facts
Where information cannot be independently verified, we will make this clear to readers.
We recognise that technology reporting often involves rapidly developing stories. When information changes after publication, we may update an article and, where appropriate, explain the change.
4. Sources
TechArena seeks information from credible and relevant sources, including:
- Companies and organisations
- Government agencies and regulators
- Industry executives and professionals
- Researchers and academics
- Founders and entrepreneurs
- Official documents and announcements
- Public records
- Interviews
- Industry events
- Other reputable media organisations
We generally prefer primary sources where they are available.
Information obtained from social media, online forums, anonymous sources or other secondary sources should be treated with appropriate caution and verified where possible.
5. Anonymous Sources
TechArena may use information from anonymous sources where there is a legitimate editorial reason to protect the source’s identity.
Anonymity should not be granted simply for convenience.
Before publishing information from an anonymous source, the journalist should consider:
- The source’s proximity to the information
- The source’s credibility
- Whether the information can be independently verified
- Whether there is a significant public-interest reason to publish it
- Whether the source has a potential personal or commercial interest in the story
Where appropriate, the reason for anonymity may be explained to readers without revealing the source’s identity.
6. Quotes and Interviews
Quotes should accurately reflect what a person said.
TechArena does not materially alter quotations in a way that changes their meaning.
Minor edits may be made for clarity, grammar or length, particularly in written interviews, provided the meaning of the speaker’s statement is not changed.
Where a quotation is translated from another language, the translation should aim to preserve the original meaning.
7. Press Releases and Company Announcements
TechArena regularly receives press releases, company announcements and contributed information.
Receiving a press release does not automatically mean it will be published.
When using information from a company announcement, TechArena may:
- Rewrite it into editorial format
- Verify claims where practical
- Seek additional context
- Include independent perspectives
- Attribute claims to the organisation making them
Company claims should not automatically be presented as independently established facts.
8. Sponsored and Commercial Content
TechArena may publish sponsored articles, branded content, partner content, advertisements and other commercial material.
Commercial content should be clearly distinguishable from independent editorial coverage.
Sponsored or paid content may be labelled using terms such as:

- Branded Content
- Advertisement
- In Partnership With
- Sponsored By
The exact label may depend on the format.
Payment for content does not permit a commercial partner to present advertising as independent journalism.
9. Product Reviews and Recommendations
Where TechArena reviews technology products, services or platforms, editorial conclusions should be based on the publication’s experience, available evidence and clearly stated criteria.
Receiving a product, service or complimentary access does not guarantee a positive review.
Where relevant, TechArena may disclose when a product, service, event invitation or other benefit has been provided by a company.
10. Conflicts of Interest
TechArena journalists, contributors and editorial staff should avoid situations where personal, financial or professional interests could compromise—or reasonably appear to compromise—editorial independence.
Potential conflicts should be disclosed to the editor or editorial lead.
Where a conflict cannot reasonably be managed, the journalist or contributor may be removed from the assignment.
11. AI and Technology-Assisted Journalism
TechArena may use technology, including artificial intelligence tools, to support parts of the editorial workflow.
AI tools may assist with tasks such as:
- Research organisation
- Transcription
- Translation
- Headline ideation
- Editing and proofreading
- Summarisation
- Data analysis
AI-generated information should not be treated as automatically accurate.
Journalists remain responsible for verifying facts and ensuring that published material meets TechArena’s editorial standards.
AI should not be used to fabricate:
- Quotes
- Sources
- Interviews
- Events
- Statistics
- Images presented as authentic news photographs
- Statements attributed to real people
Where AI-generated or substantially AI-manipulated material is published in a context where its nature could reasonably confuse readers, TechArena should provide appropriate disclosure.
12. Images, Video and Multimedia
TechArena should make reasonable efforts to ensure that photographs, videos, graphics and other visual material are accurately represented.
Images should not be manipulated in a way that materially misrepresents a news event or person.
Illustrative or AI-generated imagery should be identified where necessary to prevent readers from mistaking it for authentic documentary material.
TechArena should respect copyright and obtain appropriate permission or licensing where required.
13. Headlines
Headlines should accurately represent the content of an article.
TechArena may use compelling headlines designed to attract readers, but will not deliberately mislead readers through:
- False claims
- Material omissions
- Fake quotations
- Exaggeration that changes the meaning of the story
Click-through performance should not override editorial accuracy.
14. Fairness and Right of Reply
TechArena aims to provide fair and reasonable representation of relevant parties.
Where an article contains serious allegations or potentially damaging claims about an individual or organisation, TechArena may seek comment from the affected party before publication.
If a response is not received within a reasonable timeframe, the article may state that the organisation or individual was contacted but did not respond.
If a response is received after publication and is materially relevant, TechArena may update the article or publish a follow-up.
15. Privacy
TechArena respects individuals’ privacy.
Personal information should only be published where there is a legitimate editorial reason to do so.
We will take particular care when reporting information involving private individuals, minors or sensitive personal circumstances.
Public availability of information does not automatically mean that publication is appropriate.
16. Language and Representation
TechArena seeks to report on Africa’s technology ecosystem with accuracy and respect.
We avoid language that unnecessarily stereotypes individuals, communities, countries or groups.
We aim to represent different perspectives within the technology ecosystem, including founders, investors, employees, regulators, researchers, customers and users.

The responsibility for maintaining TechArena’s editorial standards ultimately rests with the editorial leadership of the publication.
Readers, sources and organisations are encouraged to contact TechArena when they believe an article contains a factual error or does not meet our editorial standards.
We take legitimate concerns seriously and will investigate them appropriately.
