Absa Bank Kenya has launched Absa Next, a digital finance platform that brings banking, savings, investments, credit and lifestyle services together in a single ecosystem.
The platform is available to both Absa customers and non-customers. The bank says it is designed to give users greater control over their finances through a digital-first experience.
Among its features, Absa Next allows customers to save and invest individually or in groups, with savings rates of up to 7% and investment returns of up to 16%, according to the bank.
Users can also access instant credit ranging from KSh500 to KSh1 million for personal or business needs, manage personal and business finances from a single dashboard, link Absa and non-Absa Visa cards and split expenses with family and friends.
Absa says Absa Next also uses alternative credit-scoring capabilities, incorporating a wider range of financial behaviours and data points to support access to credit.
Speaking at the launch, Absa Bank Kenya CEO Yusuf Omari said the platform was developed in response to changing consumer expectations.
“Rather than digitising traditional banking, we have reimagined the banking experience around our customers’ goals, behaviours and aspirations,” said Omari.
Absa Group Chief Executive for Personal and Private Banking, Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, said Kenya’s financial innovation ecosystem made it a natural market for the platform’s launch.
Our take
Absa Next is a promising product, although its appeal is not immediately obvious. Many of the features introduced at launch are already available through other financial services platforms.
With so much packed into the platform from the outset, Absa Next may be overwhelming to customers if there is no clear primary use case that sets it apart.
Its use of open banking, alternative credit scoring and its broader ambition to bring different aspects of financial management into one ecosystem could become more compelling as the product evolves.
Even with that said, it is still a product worth watching. We will track how Absa develops it, how customers respond and whether it can standout in Kenya’s digital finance market.
