Proparco has completed an investment in BasiGo, the Nairobi-based e-mobility company that is working with public transport operators in Kenya and Rwanda to transition to electric buses.

BasiGo has 100 electric buses currently deployed across the two countries. The company locally assembles electric buses, develops and operates charging infrastructure, and works with bus operators to provide a cost-effective electric alternative to diesel buses for mass public transport.

BasiGo buses have carried more than 9 million passengers. Twenty-nine Saccos are benefiting from buses that deliver about 40% annual operating cost savings.

Jean Guyonnet-Dupérat, Regional Director for East Africa at Proparco, said, “By supporting BasiGo, we are helping to unlock a new generation of clean, reliable mass public transport solutions for tens of thousands of passengers in Kenya and Rwanda, and to scale this solution in other African cities.” He added that BasiGo’s locally assembled electric buses cut emissions, improve air quality, and support quality jobs. He said this aligns with Proparco’s mandate on the continent, the Choose Africa initiative, and commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Jit Bhattacharya, CEO and Co-Founder of BasiGo, said, “Proparco’s investment is a powerful endorsement of the future we are building for African cities.” He added that BasiGo has demonstrated that electric buses deliver stronger economics for operators while reducing emissions and improving the passenger experience. He described the investment as a catalyst for scaling local assembly, expanding charging infrastructure, and accelerating the company’s goal of deploying 1,000 electric buses.
