TCL has sued Samsung in a Los Angeles federal court according to Reuters. TCL is accusing Samsung of falsely advertising some of its televisions as using Mini LED technology but they don’t.
The lawsuit alleges that Samsung marketed its M Series televisions as featuring Mini LED technology which is not true. This technology is designed to improve picture quality.
TCL says the M Series televisions do not contain the key technological features associated with Mini LED displays. These include technology such as local dimming among others.
TCL alleges that the televisions were based on Samsung’s standard LED television products but are marketed to consumers as Mini LED models which can confuse consumers.
TCL challenges Samsung’s Mini LED claims
Mini LED technology uses a much larger number of smaller LEDs for backlighting compared to normal LED TVs. This technology provides better control of screen brightness and also improve contrast and picture quality.
TCL, in its lawsuit, argues that consumers purchasing Mini LED televisions expect the picture-quality improvements associated with the technology.
TCL alleges that Samsung’s marketing of the M Series as Mini LED could mislead consumers who are looking particularly for Mini LED televisions with those capabilities.
The company also claims that the alleged misrepresentation has affected its sales, goodwill and technology interests.
Samsung has rejected the allegations and said it will defend itself against the lawsuit.
The company said it stands behind the quality and accuracy of its product descriptions.
The dispute will now be considered by the U.S. federal court. TCL is seeking an order to prevent Samsung from using the “Mini LED” designation for the products in question. It is also seeking an unspecified amount in monetary damages.
The allegations contained in TCL’s lawsuit have not been established as fact by the court.
