BasiGo has expanded its electric bus infrastructure in Nairobi with the launch of three new charging depots and a dedicated service centre.
The new depots are located in Komarock, Taj Mall (Pipeline) and Riruta. A fourth facility is expected to open in Juja before the end of the year. Each depot has high-capacity DC fast chargers with GB/T and CCS2 connectors. These can charge up to 100 buses daily through sequential charging.
The new depots are designed to keep buses on the road longer by minimizing downtime during charging and ensuring more efficient operations.
“We are building the essential infrastructure for the future of public transport in Kenya,” said Moses Nderitu, Managing Director of BasiGo Kenya. “This expansion gives bus operators the confidence to go electric. They can see that the essential backbone, from rapid charging to local service, is now in place, ensuring their e-buses operate efficiently and reliably for Nairobi’s passengers.”
Each depot utilizes Kenya Power’s e-mobility tariff and taps into excess nighttime grid capacity. The facilities support fast charging speeds of up to 160kW.
BasiGo’s new Service and Customer Excellence Centre at the Taj Mall depot will handle specialized maintenance for CATL battery technology. It will also offer direct technical support and training for bus operators.
This facility ensures that local teams have the expertise to manage the performance, safety and longevity of the growing electric bus fleet.
“Kenya Power is proud to power the future of mobility in Kenya,” said Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Power. “As demand for electric transport grows, our role is to ensure the national grid is ready to support this shift with reliable, accessible electricity. This expansion is a great example of what’s possible when innovators like BasiGo partner with us to deliver clean energy solutions to the public.”
