Earlier today, Samsung unveiled its latest Foldable device, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. Both these are the successor’s to last year’s models but they only have a handful of upgrades. The phones will be available in Kenya for Ksh 193,000 and Ksh 325,000 for the Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 respectively.

Both phones are available on pre-order in Kenya from today and for the next 3 weeks. Those who pre-order the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will get a pair of Galaxy Buds 2 while those who pre-order the Z Fold 5 will get the Samsung Watch 5 for free. You can pre-order one through Samsung brand shops across the country.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

Out of the two foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is what caught my attention. It now has a much larger cover display that almost covers the entire outer shell. A bigger display means you can do much more when the phone is folded. I did not have an issue with the cover display of the Flip 4 when I reviewed it but I still like this big display on the Flip 5.

Besides the bigger outer display, the Flip 5 also comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, the same processor you get on the Galaxy S23 series. This processor has proven to be powerful and efficient and is the perfect one for a flagship foldable phone.

The big issue I have with the Z Flip 5 is that it comes with a 3,700 mAh battery. When using the Flip 4, I could not get the battery (which is also 3,700 mAh) to last an entire day on a single charge. I feel like this will be the case with the Flip 5.

One key change we have with the Flip 5 is that it now folds completely flat unlike its predecessor. I know most people who have used this phone will appreciate this. Some of the other specifications you get with this phone include:

    • Display: 6.7-inch (1080 x 2640 pixels), AMOLED, 120Hz, HDR10+.
    • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
    • Rear Camera: 12MP + 12MP
    • Front Camera: 10MP
    • RAM: 8GB
    • Storage: 128/256GB
    • Battery Capacity: 3,700mAh, 25W charging
    • Android 13, One UI 5.1.1

Just like the Z Flip 5, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a very few upgrades compared to the Z Fold 4. It also comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and folds completely flat with no gap. This is one of the big upgrades Samsung has added to its foldable devices this year. The crease is still there for both the Fold and Flip 5 phones.

The inner display gets really bright for use outdoors and Samsung says this display reaches 1,750 nits. This is good and is at par with the S23 series. Some of its other specifications are:

    • Display: 7.6-inch (1812 x 2176 pixels), Dynamic AMOLED, 120Hz, HDR10+.
    • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
    • Rear Camera: 50MP + 10 MP + 12MP
    • Front Camera: 4MP under display and 10MP cover camera
    • RAM:12GB
    • Storage: 256/512GB OR 1tb
    • Battery Capacity: 4,400mAh, 25W charging
    • Android 13, One UI 5.1.1

Besides the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5, Samsung also unveiled the Galaxy Watch 6 and the Galaxy Tab S9 series. These are also expected to launch in Kenya but their prices are not known as of now.
