LG Promises up to Three OS Updates for its Premium Phones

LG WING

LG officially announced winding down its smartphone business for good earlier this week, after continuously making losses despite efforts to change the unit’s trajectory. The company said it would offer updates to its phones during the exit announcement but didn’t specify how long.

Now, the company has revealed how it plans to continue supporting some of its phones. For its premium phones, the company is committing to three major Android OS updates.

“All premium LG smartphones currently in use will receive up to three iterations of Android operating system updates from the year of purchase,” LG said.

The three major OS updates only apply to select LG phones launched in 2019 and later. LG phones eligible for three OS updates include those under the G, V, and VELVET series. LG’s enthusiastic Wing phone is also part of the extended support program.

Considering the exit, it more than makes sense for the company to guarantee OS updates to its devices. The pledge will ensure budding buyers can still grab a unit and ensure that the company still has their back despite the fallout.

LG will also roll out two OS updates to select 2020 models like the LG Stylo and K series.

LG decided to leave the “incredibly competitive mobile phone sector” that has been in the red for over 20 consecutive quarters since 2015 to focus on growth areas like electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence, and business-to-business solutions.

While it waits to wind down the mobile unit on July 31, 2021, the company says it “will continue to manufacture phones through the second quarter to meet contractual obligations to carriers and partners.”
