The OPPO Reno 5 is the latest in the Reno series and is currently available in Kenya for Ksh 41,999. I have been using the Reno 5 for well over a month testing a number of things and one of them is its gaming capabilities.

I did manage to play a couple of games mainly PUBG and Asphalt 9 just to see how this phone handled those.

The OPPO Reno 5 comes with a few upgraded specs compared to the Reno 4 but keeps some as they are like the Snapdragon 720G processor that powers both devices. The Reno 4’s performance was good back when I was using it and I expect the same with the Reno 5.

Before We go any further, let us highlight some of the key specifications of the OPPO Reno 5.

Display: The Oppo Reno 5 has a 6.43-inch 1080p AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate.

    Processor: Octa-core Snapdragon 720G processor.

    RAM: 8GB of RAM.

Storage: 128GB of internal memory that can be expanded via a microSD card.

Rear Cameras: 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP mono camera.

Front Camera: 44MP selfie camera with AI Portrait Mode.

Battery: 4310mAh battery that supports the 50W fast charging technology via USB-C port.

Operating System: Android 11-based ColorOS 11.1 out of the box.

Gaming on the OPPO Reno 5

Since this is a gaming review, I thought I should start by highlighting some of the key gaming specifications of the Reno 5.

The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 720G processor that has been paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage space. As for the GPU, it has the Adreno 618.

You are going to interact with the display when gaming and for that you will be using the 6.43 inch one with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. This display has a 90 HZ refresh rate for a smooth gaming experience.

    OPPO Reno 5 gaming

Playing PUBG and Asphlant 9 on the Reno 5 was quite a good experience. Compared with the Reno 4, the improvements are clear. The phone handles better and the refresh rate adds to the overall good experience.

Throughout the testing period, the phone handled gameplay with no issues at all. I played PUBG at the highest frame rate and with HD graphics and the experience was smooth. Gameplay was good and way better than what I had expected. Even at the highest graphics settings available, there was no issue with performance which is quite commendable.

    Game Space

The Reno 5 also comes with the Game Space app pre-installed that help you tweak some of the settings for the perfect gaming experience. This app is available in other OPPO smartphones and is meant to ensure you change some settings to get the phone to deliver the gaming experience you seek.

    Through Game Space, you can:

    • Overclock the processor if you want to get the highest gaming settings
    • Block notifications and calls that may interfere with your gaming experience.
    • Control notifications that can be displayed when gaming
