Spotify in Kenya: Subscription Price, Packages and Everything Else

spotify logo

Spotify is finally available in Kenya after a long wait. The Swedish company announced entry into over 80 markets across Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and Latin America on Monday 22nd.

And two days later, Spotify is now available in Kenya. With its official availability, you can download the Spotify app from Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store.

Here’s everything you need to know about the streaming service.

Spotify Kenya Subscription Charges and Packages

How much does Spotify cost in Kenya? The subscription price is dependent on the selected streaming package. Each package has its own features and limitations, so you have to consider which plan is best for you.

There are five different Spotify Kenya prices and subscription plans available in Kenya;

  • Spotify Free
  • Spotify Individual
  • Spotify Student
  • Spotify Premium Duo
  • Spotify Family

All the plans include access to millions of songs, thousands of playlists, and social share features.

Let me break each of them down for you.

Spotify Free in Kenya – Ksh 0 per month

Spotify Free is, well, free. You don’t pay anything at all. Download the app, sign up via the multiple options available and start streaming. The plan has several limitations, though.

With Spotify Free, you can only skip six tracks per hour. Spotify doesn’t let you play a specific song in a playlist. Rather, you only shuffle play, which hands the control to Spotify to play songs in a playlist or album in whichever order it wants. The only exception is songs in the “Made For You” section. Spotify Free also includes unskippable audio ads between songs.

Audio quality is lower with Spotify Free – 128kbps on the desktop app and 160kbps on mobile. With all the other Spotify Premium plans, the streaming quality is capped at 320kbps. And, finally, you can’t save songs for offline listening with Spotify Free. However, Spotify Free users can only download podcast episodes for offline listening.

Spotify Individual – Ksh 299/month

Spotify’s Premium Individual plan includes ad-free music streaming, offline download support, unlimited skips, and 320kbps audio. You can also play a select song individually in a playlist, which the platform calls ‘On-demand playback.’

Spotify Student – Ksh 149/month

This is the cheapest Spotify subscription plan available. Spotify Premium Student provides all the perks included with the individual subscription plan but at 50 percent less. The only requirement to pay for the student plan is to have a corporate student email from an accredited university.

Spotify Duo – Ksh 389/month

Spotify Duo is the newest plan, a special plan that allows merging two Premium individual accounts. Duo involves two people with separate Spotify Premium accounts paying for a single bill of Ksh 389 per month.

Spotify Duo includes all the premium features – no ads, on-demand playback, offline listening, and unlimited song skips. It also includes Duo Mix, an exclusive playlist that’s regularly updated based on the music you both like.

However, each user gets to keep their music, playlists, and recommendations. This plan is ideal for students or roommates. And it’s a better alternative than sharing a single Spotify account – everyone has their own playlists and login details.

Spotify Family – Ksh 479/month

Spotify Family is ideal for families. It supports up to six Premium accounts, each with individual music libraries. Spotify Family includes family-related features in addition to no ads, on-demand playback, offline listening, and unlimited song skips. These include a Kid’s premium account and parental controls. There’s also a special Family Mix playlist that provides the best of what everyone loves.

Spotify Prepay Kenya

Spotify also has prepaid options that don’t renew automatically, unlike those plans above. Spotify Prepay includes a one-time payment. You can pay for 7 days, one, three, six months, or a full year.

For 7 days, Spotify Prepaid charges Ksh 89, and you can pay only via M-PESA. The 12-month option can save you some cash (Ksh 598) than paying for 299 in a year – it costs Ksh 2,990. I’ve also noticed Prepay is only available for Spotify Individual plan.

Here’s how each Spotify prepaid plan costs;

  • Spotify Prepay 7 days – Ksh 89
  • Spotify Prepay 1 month – Ksh 329
  • Spotify Prepay 3 months – Ksh 956
  • Spotify Prepay 6 months – Ksh 1794
  • Spotify Prepay 1 year – Ksh 2,990

Spotify Kenya Payment Methods Supported

Spotify supports credit and debit cards, PayPal, and our own M-PESA. The only caveat with M-PESA is that you cannot use it to pay for the available Spotify monthly subscriptions, at least for now. It is only available under Spotify Prepay, which involves a one-time payment for a specified period.

I hope Spotify learns of the M-PESA Bill management system so we can use M-PESA to pay for monthly subscriptions hands-free in the future.

How to pay for Spotify in Kenya via M-Pesa

As previously mentioned, you can only pay for Spotify using M-PESA for Prepaid plans.

Step 1. Go to the Premium tab on the bottom right

Step 2. Scroll down to Premium prepaid and tap “Get Premium.”

Step 3. Select preferred to prepay package – 7 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months

Step 4. Select M-PESA as the payment method

Step 5. Input your M-PESA number and click Continue Purchase.

Step 6. You will be prompted to enter your M-PESA PIN after a few seconds. Enter the PIN and wait for the app to complete the transaction.

Spotify Vs. Apple Music vs. Deezer

In comparison to other major streaming apps available in Kenya, Spotify’s proposition is pretty strong. Here’s a breakdown of the three.
