The first half of 2020 has just ended and analytics firm, Sensor Tower has released its Store Intelligence report. The report reveals the most downloaded apps and games, those that made more cash among other details in the first half of the year.
As most people were abiding with the shelter in place rules, the grossing apps of H1 paints a picture of that. One of the most popular apps was TikTok which was ranked as the top non-game app by downloads. The short-video sharing platform led across Google Play Store and Apple’s Store raking in 626 million installs in the first half of 2020.
At number two was Facebook’s WhatsApp Messenger followed by Zoom, the now giant video conferencing platform.

In terms of revenue, Tinder made the most revenue in this category generating an estimated $433 million in spending across both stores. YouTube came in at number two with $2million shy of Tinder’s revenue. TikTok made $421 million despite being the most downloaded non-game app across Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
For gaming apps, Battle royale titles were the top apps. The top spot went to Tencent’s PUBG Mobile. At number two was yet another Tencent game app – Garena’s Garena Free Fire. Hunter Assasin, Brains Out and Gardenscapes followed at number 3, 4 and 5 respectively.
Sorry, Call of Duty Mobile fans, the game is nowhere to be seen even in the top 10 list despite record-breaking debut.
Top-grossing apps that made the most revenue included two titles from China’s Tencent Games. Tencent’s PUBG Mobile unseated Honor of Kings as the top-grossing game in the period. PUBG Mobile is estimated to have generated a whopping $1.3 billion globally – excluding China’s third-party Android marketplaces. Honor of Kings also secured almost $1billion for Tencent.
