If you’re a DStv subscriber, you may soon pay slightly less for your monthly subscription. This is because MultiChoice plans to lower the subscription rates across all its packages in Kenya.
Sources who spoke to TechArena said the announcement will be made next week and this will be the first time the pay TV provider lowers it’s rates in Kenya.
Last year we compared DStv rates across the continent and found outthat Kenyans pay the most compared to other African markets including South Africa, Nigeria and even Uganda. At that time, DStv premium was approximately $91 in Kenya compared to $29 in Nigeria and $54 in South Africa. This just shows how Kenyans have always been overcharged for essentially the same service.
The source who spoke to TechArena did not reveal the exact pricing details or the reductions subscribers should expect. With the current economic environment, any reduction will be welcomed.
Canal+ acquired MultiChoice Group late last year and has been looking for ways to cut costs, slow subscriber losses and encourage more customers to stay on the platform. The company started by shutting down Showmax in April this year saying the substantial annual losses experienced by Showmax were unsustainable. The reduction in subscription rates is the latest move the company hopes will stop the subscriber churn.
We will keep an eye on any developments from MultiChoice besides the price changes and keep you updated.
