Samsung has cracked the premium smartphone segment but the company is still struggling with the entry level sector. The company has some good high-end phones but the same cannot be said about its entry level phones. Some of them are just bad and even a device such as the Galaxy Grand Prime Pro 2018 that I reviewed last year is good but does not compete with some of the other phones offered by some of the popular Chinese manufacturers we have in the country.

Samsung hopes things might change a bit and it will gain significant market share this year. The company has just launched its latest entry level smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy J4 Core in Kenya. The Galaxy J4 Core is the bigger brother to the Galaxy J2 Core (Android Go phone) that the company unveiled in the country last year and is available for Ksh 10,500.

None of these entry level devices from Samsung gained significant traction in the market and the company hopes that will change with the Galaxy J4 Core.

Speaking while unveiling the phone, Charles Kimari, Head of Mobile division at Samsung Electronics East Africa said, “The Galaxy J4 Core offers consumers a complete smartphone experience, the phone packs 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 512GB via microSD card, it is powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and it comes with 1GB of RAM.”

These specifications do not sound impressive considering the price of the phone and what we are used to seeing from other manufacturers. “Even as we prepare for the next phase of mobile telephony, we are still keen on providing affordable devices that are compatible with modern technologies,” Kimari concluded. I do not see anything modern about this phone and to be honest, it comes with specifications straight out of 2017 (or earlier) and I am not sure how it is supposed to compete with devices from Infinix, Huawei and even Tecno. I will be interested in seeing how these phones perform in this market.

Some of the other key specifications of the Galaxy J4 Core are listed below.

    Display Size: 6.0 inches with a resolution of 720 x 1480 pixels

    Processor: 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 425

    RAM: 1 GB

Storage Space: 16 GB, can be expanded up to 512GB using a microSD card

    GPU: Adreno 308

Android Version: Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition)

    Connectivity: 2G/3G/4G

Camera: 8 MP Camera at the back with a 5 MP front-facing one

    Battery: 3300 mAh removable battery
