Sony is narrowing down its smartphone lineup and this will see the end of the Xperia Z, M, E and C devices. We have been expecting this for a while so this is not entirely a surprise. Sony has hinted before that it may be killing off some Xperia devices as sales have not been very good and the company wants to have a streamlined device lineup going forward.

Going forward, Sony plans to focus on its new lineup, the Xperia X series according to sources who spoke to TechRadar. The Xperia X family has not been around for that long and is made up of the original Xperia X, X Performance, XA, XA Ultra and the recently launched Xperia X Compact and XZ. This will give the company the opportunity to offer consumers slightly better products and hopefully this might translate to better sales.

Sony has also confirmed that there will be a number of devices in the Xperia X family coming this year. This means that the company is not slowing down production but is rather sticking to one smartphone series going forward.

Speaking to TechRadar, Sony Mobile EVP of Global Sales & Marketing, Hideyuki Furumi said, “We have the Xperia Ear and the Xperia Projector – the Xperia brand is expanding in terms of categories. We need to establish what the Xperia smartphone stands for.”

“Our focus is on essential features as well as making the product much more intelligent, and that’s the kind of common theme of your smartphone. “So we decided to brand our smartphones basically X rather than Z or C or M or whatever,” added Furumi.

As for the existing Xperia devices that are not under the X series, Furumi said that they will stick around but the company has no plans to release any new ones if they are not under the Xperia X lineup. The company has confirmed that there is an exception to this but is yet to reveal anything more in that regard.
