Samsung was not the first Smartphone manufacturer to release a Smartwatch but the company is currently one of the biggest players in the Smartwatch scene. According to data released by Statista, Samsung sold over 1.2 Million smartwatches in the fourth quarter of 2014. This is the period between October and December 2014.

The Samsung Gear S, Samsung’s latest Smartwatch, was unveiled in August 2014 and Samsung pushed it to consumers during the fourth quarter of 2014 so the sales figures are not surprising. Selling 1.2 Million units in just 3 months makes Samsung the leading manufacturer of Smartwatches in terms of sales.

The Gear S is powered by Tizen and not Android wear and is very unique as it is a standalone Smartwatch that does not need pairing with a Smartwatch. It has a SIM card slot and supports 3G connectivity.

Following Samsung closely is Pebble that sold over 700,000 units. Third in line is the Fitbit that was way close to Pebble selling 600,000 units. Sony, which was the first player in the Smartwatch business, came in fourth with 550,000 units sold and Lenovo closed the top five list with 500,000 units sold.

With the Apple watch out, I guess we will have to wait and see how the standings change in the next quarter.
