Android 4.4 KitKat Accounts For 25% of All Android Devices

At the beginning of every month, Google releases the Android distribution numbers to show developers what the most popular versions are. These numbers help developers create apps targeting the most popular versions to maximize the adoption rates.

For September, Google collected the data during a 7-day period ending on September 9, 2014. This data was gathered from the new Google Play Store app that supports Android 2.2 and above. This means that devices running older Android versions are not included.

Analyzing the numbers, you will clearly see that KitKat has gained ground and now controls 25% of the market. This is a significant rise but still there is much to be done seeing that the earlier Android versions are still around. Google is just a few weeks shy of unveiling the next Android version and by the time it comes, let’s hope the earlier Android versions percentage on the market reduce significantly.

KitKat: 24.5-percent

Jelly Bean: A whopping 53.8-percent

Ice Cream Sandwich: 9.6-percent

Gingerbread: 11.4-percent

Froyo: 0.7-percent
