Mitsumi Distribution has announced a $2 million investment in an artificial intelligence (AI) cloud platform. The company says the aim is to empower young Kenyan innovators with access to critical digital infrastructure.
The initiative was unveiled during the AI Everything Kenya x GITEX Kenya Summit in Nairobi.
According to Mitesh Shah, Co-founder and Managing Director of Mitsumi, the investment goes beyond commercial interests and is largely driven by corporate social responsibility.
“The AI cloud we are putting up is around $2 million. This is mostly CSR from Mitsumi’s side so that most of our educated youths can utilize it for different things,” Shah said.
The platform is expected to provide university graduates, software developers and early-stage tech entrepreneurs with affordable access to AI infrastructure. This is an area that has traditionally remained financially out of reach for many in the ecosystem.
By lowering the barrier to entry, the company says the cloud platform will enable developers to build, test, and scale AI-driven applications, while also connecting them to international technology markets without the high costs associated with global cloud services.
Jagat Shah, Chairman and CEO of Mitsumi Distribution, said,
“So many youths are well educated to do something good, but because of cost and affordability, they are not getting good exposure,” he said.
Mitsumi revealed that it has already onboarded more than 50 young professionals into its AI division, where they are working on research, product development, and digital solutions.
The firm believes Kenya’s growing pool of tech talent positions the country as a strong contender for becoming a regional hub for AI and software innovation, provided that access to infrastructure continues to improve.
Mitsumi also pointed to the importance of policy and regulation in shaping the future of AI in the country. The company welcomed ongoing government efforts to establish a national AI framework. It said that clear guidelines around ethical AI use could help encourage responsible innovation.
The distributor added that locally developed AI solutions have the potential to transform key sectors such as healthcare, education and public service delivery.
