Africa’s blockchain and artificial intelligence ecosystem is often discussed in headlines and policy papers, but rarely documented through the people actually building it on the ground.

In this episode of the TechArena Podcast, we sat down with key voices behind BeyondTheCode.ai, a global documentary series exploring how emerging technologies are being built, used and experienced across Africa and the Global South.

A documentary focused on people, not just platforms

BeyondTheCode.ai is not a traditional tech documentary. As co-producer and founder Nefertiti Angelisa Strong explains, the series focuses on the human, cultural, and community layer of technologies like blockchain, AI, and artificial general intelligence (AGI).

The documentary follows developers, artists, founders and communities and captures how technology intersects with creativity, identity, ethics and opportunity across different regions.

    Why Nairobi and why now?

Kenya plays a central role in this story.

According to Darlington Baraka, President of Blockchain Center Nairobi, Nairobi has become a critical access point for developers seeking real opportunities and not just events. The Blockchain Center was created to reduce fragmentation across communities and offer a physical, always-open space where builders can learn, collaborate and access mentorship.

That work is already translating into impact: dozens of developers trained, paid mentorships, and real jobs created within the blockchain ecosystem.

For BeyondTheCode.ai, Nairobi and Africa more broadly represent more than a market. It is a place where technology adoption, regulation, talent, and cultural context collide in ways that will shape how future systems are built globally.
