Airtel Africa has posted strong results for the half-year ending September 2025.

For the first time, Airtel Africa’s data business has surpassed voice to become its largest revenue stream. This shows the shift in consumer behavior across its 14 African markets. Data revenue grew by 37%, driven by an 18% rise in data customers and higher average usage per user, now at 8.2GB per month.

Smartphone penetration also rose to 46.8%, while 98.5% of Airtel’s sites are now 4G-enabled. The company said it has rolled out more than 2,350 new sites and expanded its fibre network by 4,000 km to reach over 81,000 km, boosting data capacity and network quality.

    Airtel Money

Airtel Money continues to be one of the operator’s strongest growth engines. The mobile money platform now serves 49.8 million customers, a 20% increase from last year. Transaction volumes reached $193 billion for the second quarter alone. This is a 36% jump year-on-year.

Airtel says nearly half of its mobile money users now access the service through smartphones, which has helped lift average revenue per user.

    Data Centres

Airtel Africa continues to invest heavily in its network and infrastructure to improve service quality and expand digital inclusion. The company is building out its 5G network in Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia, while its Nxtra by Airtel division is constructing a new 44MW hyperscale data centre in Nairobi’s Tatu City. This is set to be the largest in Eastern Africa once operational in 2027.

This follows another 38MW facility under construction in Lagos, signaling Airtel’s growing ambitions in the enterprise and cloud space.
