Key Upgrades in the Galaxy Z Flip 6

The most noteworthy upgrade comes in the camera department. The Flip 6 boasts a 50MP main camera, a notable leap from the 12MP main sensor on the Flip 5. This enhancement promises sharper images with more detail and better color accuracy. Additionally, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is powered by a new chip optimized for Samsung’s AI capabilities, delivering smoother performance and better handling of tasks such as photo editing and multitasking.

Another welcome improvement is the phone’s hinge design. The crease on the internal foldable display, which was a point of contention for some users of previous models, is now less visible. Samsung has worked to refine the mechanism, making the phone feel sturdier and slightly thinner when folded. The battery size has also been increased, offering more usage time on a single charge, without compromising the phone’s sleek form factor.

    Design and Display

On the surface, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 doesn’t stray far from its predecessor when it comes to design. The clamshell foldable still features a premium, compact build, but with a few adjustments that make it even more appealing. The edges of the frame are now flatter, giving the device a more modern, bold aesthetic. While the phone still can’t be easily opened with one hand, it feels solid and durable when held.

Samsung has kept the 3.4-inch external display from the Flip 5, allowing users to quickly check notifications, messages, and widgets without opening the phone. The internal 6.7-inch AMOLED display has received some enhancements for increased durability, but it still retains the familiar foldable experience. The screen is slightly brighter and offers better minimum brightness settings, which is perfect for night-time browsing or media consumption in low-light conditions.

The Z Flip 6 is available in an array of vibrant colors, including Silver Shadow, Yellow, Blue, and Mint. For those seeking something more exclusive, Samsung offers Crafted Black, White, and Peach options available only on Samsung.com. The seamless wraparound color on the frame adds to the overall sleekness, further distinguishing the Flip 6 from its predecessor.

    Camera

One of the biggest complaints about the Galaxy Z Flip 5 was its 12MP main camera, which fell short of expectations for a premium device. Samsung has addressed this by upgrading the main camera on the Flip 6 to a 50MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. This means sharper photos, better low-light performance, and more natural color reproduction. The new sensor excels in capturing fine details, while Galaxy AI optimizes photos for balanced contrast and dynamic range.

The ultra-wide camera, however, remains at 12MP, similar to the Flip 5. While it delivers satisfactory results, there are no major improvements here compared to the previous generation. On the front, the 10MP selfie camera ensures good quality for video calls and selfies, and thanks to the phone’s unique foldable form factor, users can even take selfies using the main camera for improved clarity and detail.

In terms of software features, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 incorporates Samsung’s latest AI-powered camera tools, such as Generative Edit and Edit Suggestions. These features, powered by the phone’s new chipset, make photo editing faster and more intuitive. Portrait mode also sees some improvement, offering better background separation and more natural bokeh, although it still struggles with certain challenging shots.

    Performance

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, specifically optimized for Samsung’s AI features. This processor provides a noticeable performance boost, making the phone faster and more efficient in everyday tasks and demanding applications alike. Whether you’re gaming, multitasking, or leveraging AI-powered photo editing features, the Flip 6 delivers a smooth and lag-free experience.

This is complemented by an upgrade in RAM, with the Flip 6 now offering 12GB of RAM compared to the 8GB found in the Flip 5. This increase greatly improves the device’s multitasking capabilities and ensures that it handles resource-intensive tasks with ease. Storage options include 256GB and 512GB variants, although there is no microSD card slot for additional storage expansion.

    Battery and Charging

One of the key improvements in the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is its battery capacity. Samsung has increased the battery size from 3,700mAh in the Flip 5 to 4,000mAh in this new model. Despite this upgrade, the device remains as slim and compact as ever, thanks to Samsung’s clever design optimizations. The battery life has improved accordingly, with the Flip 6 now able to last through a full day of moderate usage without needing to recharge.

Charging speeds remain the same, with support for 25W wired charging and 10W wireless charging. The phone can reach around 50% charge in just 30 minutes, making it convenient for users who need a quick power boost throughout the day.

    Software

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 runs on Android 14, with Samsung’s One UI 6.1 interface layered on top. This provides users with the familiar Samsung experience, complete with a variety of customization options and new Galaxy AI features. Users can take advantage of features such as Instant Slow-Mo, Generative Edit, and Note Assist, which help enhance productivity and creativity.

The cover display also sees some functional improvements, with more widgets and customization options. Suggested Replies is a new feature designed specifically for the FlexWindow display, allowing users to quickly respond to messages without needing to open the phone.

Samsung continues its commitment to long-term software support, promising 7 years of Android updates and security patches for the Galaxy Z Flip 6. This makes it one of the most future-proof foldable phones on the market.

    Price and Availability

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is priced at $Ksh 148,000. You can get the phone from Samsung retail outlets across the country.
