Increasing Threats: Kaspersky Reports 5% Growth in Daily Malicious File Distributions in 2022

Kaspersky

Cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to attack users with malicious files, and it seems that their efforts are only increasing. According to Kaspersky’s latest Security Bulletin (KSB), their detection systems discovered an average of 400,000 new malicious files every day in 2022 – that’s 5% more than in 2021. Not only did the overall number of malicious files increase, but certain types of threats also escalated. For example, the proportion of ransomware detected daily increased by a staggering 181%.

Kaspersky’s researchers found that Windows devices were the primary target of attacks, with an average of nearly 320,000 malicious files attacking these devices in 2022. In fact, 85% of all malicious files spread targeted Windows. However, it’s not just Windows users who need to be worried. The share of malicious files in Microsoft Office formats distributed daily doubled, and the share of malicious files targeting the Android platform also increased by 10%. The campaigns known as Harly and Triada Trojan, which targeted thousands of Android users around the world, are just two examples of this trend.

It’s not just the number of malicious files that’s increasing – it’s also becoming easier for cybercriminals to launch attacks. The development of Malware-as-a-Service means that anyone can attack devices without any programming knowledge. Vladimir Kuskov, head of anti-malware research at Kaspersky, warns that “it’s quite possible that in 2023 we’ll be detecting not 400,000 malicious files per day, but half a million!”

So, what can you do to protect yourself from these threats? Kaspersky recommends the following:

  1. Don’t download and install applications from untrusted sources.
  2. Don’t click on any links from unknown sources or suspicious online advertisements.
  3. Create strong and unique passwords, including a mix of lower-case and upper-case letters, numbers, and punctuation, as well as activating two-factor authentication.
  4. Always install security solutions on all of your devices.
  5. Back up your data regularly.

It’s also important to stay up to date with the latest security patches and updates for your devices and applications. This can help to protect you against known vulnerabilities that cybercriminals may try to exploit.

Kaspersky’s findings are a reminder of the importance of being vigilant when it comes to online security. With the number of malicious files detected daily increasing, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and your devices from cyber threats. Follow the recommendations above and consider investing in a reliable security solution to keep you and your data safe.
