Update: 22 April 2021

Twitter is rolling out 4K image uploads to everyone.

Original post(March 11 2021):

Twitter is rolling out a new update, raising the limitations of image quality uploaded on the site via its mobile apps.

A recent server-side update lifts the maximum image resolution to 4K from the current 2K.

It means that users will upload their high-resolution 4K images and view them in similar resolution on their timelines.

The feature is under testing, and for those who’ll be lucky to try it out, you’ll have to manually configure your account to be able to upload 4K images via Twitter for Android or iOS.

To enable 4K image uploads on Twitter, head over to Settings and privacy > Data usage > High-quality image uploads. Then, select either Mobile data & Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi only.

Keep in mind that enabling this feature tells Twitter only to compress images less – it’s not entirely lossless in all instances.

Besides the recent changes, Twitter is changing how images appear on the platform.

Now, Twitter will not force all images to appear in landscape mode. The mobile apps will begin showing the full image on the timeline. Of course, there could be some limitations to these, so lengthy infographics don’t gobble up several viewport sizes of your screen.

The new image upload changes are much welcome, and, hopefully, Twitter will also do something on its 720p maximum video resolution in the future.
