Netflix Competitor, Disney Plus, Tops 100 Million Subscribers

Disney Plus, first launched in the US in November 2019, has had massive success, acquiring a vast number of subscribers in a short time. Now, the platform has surpassed 100 million subscribers less than 16 months since launch.

The numbers come from Disney CEO Bob Chapek, who broke the news during Disney’s annual shareholders’ meeting held on Tuesday. That is a slight increase from the company’s previous subscription numbers shared nearly a month ago on February 11, when it had 94.9 million subscribers.

“The enormous success of Disney+… has inspired us to be even more ambitious and to significantly increase our investment in the development of high-quality content,” Chapek said.

As of December 2020, the company’s executives bet to have 230 million to 260 million subscribers by 2024.

Disney Plus is slowly expanding to more markets and has already launched in several markets outside the US, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Latin America, and Singapore.

The massive subscriber base is in contrast to Netflix, which is available in over 190 countries and has about twice more paying users.

In its recent annual earnings report, streaming giant Netflix’s paying subscriber base topped the 200 million milestones for the first time.

Disney Plus has been the most potent Netflix competitor of all the numerous platforms launched in less than two years.

Chapek said, “direct-to-consumer business is the company’s top priority, and [their] robust pipeline of content will continue to fuel its growth.” Disney Plus is yet to launch in any African country, and when trying to access it, you’ll bump into this message: Sorry, Disney+ is not available in your region. Unless, of course, you use a VPN.

It remains to be seen whether it will be launched in Kenya in the future.
