Apple Working on Foldable iPhone Screens – Report

Apple is reportedly working on a foldable iPhone. Bloomberg’s report suggests the company is already prototyping folding iPhone screens but only for internal testing purposes. But it seems like we should not expect a folding iPhone anytime soon.

The report notes that the American tech company has only begun working on a folding display and is yet to prototype a complete iPhone with the display.

Additionally, according to an unidentified source familiar with the matter, there are no concrete launch plans for a folding iPhone for now.

Apple’s Folding iPhone will be similar to previous devices we’ve seen from Samsung, Motorola, and many other smartphone makers. The larger concept is identical: an iPhone that can open up then fold into a more pocketable size when closed.

The display screen prototypes have a “mostly invisible hinge,” and the company has considered several screen sizes for its folding device. One screen size discussed could open into a 6.7-inch display similar to iPhone 12 Pro Max’s panel.

Talking about iPhones, Apple will release successors to its iPhone 12 series this year. After notable changes introduced last year, the sharp-edged design and 5G, the company will not reinvent the wheel in 2021 iPhones.

There will be a few subtle new features to be expected. The only prominent feature that is expected is an in-screen fingerprint reader, which is currently under testing. If all goes well, we should finally get iPhones with in-display TouchID. Apple axed TouchID in iPhone X in favor of FaceID.

It’s worth noting that Apple’s modem supplier Qualcomm has recently launched the second-generation of its 3D Sonic in-screen fingerprint sensor that’s 50% faster and 77% larger than its predecessor.

Apple plans to launch “AirTags,” a similar accessory to Samsung’s Galaxy Smart Tag that helps locate physical items.

The company has reportedly also considered removing the lightning port on some iPhone models in favor of wireless charging.
