Apple Blocks M1 Mac Users from Sideloading iPhone Apps

Apple’s groundbreaking switch to its in-house silicon based on the ARM architecture opened a whole new world of possibilities for Mac owners.

In addition to the massive performance improvement, Apple Silicon macs have access to thousands of iOS apps that weren’t natively supported. With M1 macs, users could install some iOS apps without any troubles from the Mac App Store.

While many iOS apps are available on the Mac App Store, Apple only allowed a few apps with developer approval to run on macOS be installed. There was a way to circumvent the restriction, by using a third-party app, which has been exploited to install any iOS app on macOS.

But Apple has hit back, remotely blocking the workaround that allowed Apple Silicon mac owners to sideload iOS apps that don’t have developer approval yet to run on the macs.

When users tried to sideload apps, they were hit by the message: “Unable to install xx app. Try again later”.

But on macOS 11.2 beta, Apple clearly states the reason why sideloading fails – lack of developer approval.

“This application cannot be installed because the developer did not intend for it to run on this platform.”

The latest beta of Big Sur, version 11.2, was rolled out on the 13th of this month, bearing the bad news for some users but giving developers the power to stop their apps from being used on the new M1 macs without approval.

9to5Mac notes that major developers on iOS have chosen not to offer their apps on the Mac App Store.
