Safaricom has pushed out a major update to the new mySafaricom app. The update adds biometric fingerprint protection to the app for devices that support it. This is a long overdue addition but the good thing is that we are finally getting it. For those who are not aware, Safaricom is giving 500MB free to those who download and activate this new app. You can get the app here.

The update is available on version 1.2 of the new mySafaricom app. Keep in mind that this is the new app that you can download from the Google Play Store here. This app was released to the public not so long ago and replaces the old app that has been around since 2016.

When you update the app or download it from the Play Store, you will be prompted to activate fingerprint unlock if you wish to do so. The activation process is seamless as long as your phone has a fingerprint scanner. The app will use any fingerprint scanner registered on the device

When you activate fingerprint unlock, you will need to scan your fingerprint every time you open the app. This ensures that unauthorized persons do not access it.

By default, the app locks immediately you close it and this means that every time you open it you need to scan your finger. This can be changed by going to the ‘Account’ tab on the lower right corner and choosing ‘Fingerprint protection’. From here, you can choose to have the app lock after 1 minute, 15 minutes or an hour depending on your preference. It is also from this page where you can disable fingerprint protection if you don’t want to use it any longer.

Besides fingerprint unlocking, the latest update also lets users access Bonga services right on the app. Users can now redeem and transfer bonga points seamlessly. To access bonga services, just head to the ‘Account’ tab and you will see the ‘Bonga’ option there.

If you are yet to get these features, grad the latest update of the mySafaricom app from the Play Store here.
