Netflix removed the traditional free 30-day long trial for new subscribers this month, but it seems the company has other plans to make up for that. The company plans to start offering weekend-long free access to get more users, according to Greg Peters, COO and Chief Product Officer at Netflix.

In a recent earning’s call,  Greg said, “We think that giving away everyone in a country access to Netflix for free for a weekend could be a great way to expose a bunch of new people to the amazing stories that we have, the service and how it works … and hopefully get a bunch of those folks to sign up.”

Greg said the streaming platform would offer free weekend-long access to users in different countries. As always, Netflix will first test this idea in its long-time testbed India. After India, “will see how that goes,” he said.

However, it’s not yet clear when the company will give away free access to Indian citizens.

Netflix recently recorded slow growth in its net paid subscriber additions in the three months to August. It added 2.2 million net paid subscribers down from the 6.8 million the same period last year. The company attributed the slow growth to the massive net additions recorded in the first half of the year.

As such, the company is hungrier to drive the paying subscriber base up. Before axing the free one-month trial, Netflix started offering free access to different shows to everyone without creating an account.
