Wired charging is still mainstream, but more companies are embracing the wireless option as days go by. Although wireless charging has been around for some years, we are yet to see those speeds match what has been achieved drawing power via cable.

Xiaomi is showing how much charging speeds could be achieved without using cables. The company showed off its 80W fast wireless charging solution in its latest demo, which takes a 4,000 mAh battery phone from 0 to 100 in 19 minutes.

    Xiaomi Mi 80W wireless charger
80W Mi Wireless Charging Technology can fill a 4,000 mAh battery to 10% in 1 minute, 50% in 8 minutes, and 100% in just 19 minutes.

Even better, a one-minute charge means 10% of the battery is filled. And with just 8 minutes of charging, the charging solution will fill up the battery by half.

That is faster than OPPO’s 65W wireless charging technology announced in June. To put it in context, OPPO said its 65W AirVOOC wireless charging tech could fully charge a 4000mAh battery in 30 minutes — at the fastest rate.

The 80W Mi Wireless Charging Technology will set a new standard for the industry as a whole.  The charger takes the mantle from Xiaomi’s currently mass-produced 50W wireless charging technology that juices up its MI 10 Ultra flagship phone. The Mi 10 Ultra charges at 120W via cable.

Xiaomi has not provided any details about when the 80W Mi Wireless Charger will be available on the market.

In comparison to the current solutions, OPPO is still the market leader with its 65W AirVOOC wireless flash charging technology. On the Apple camp, nothing is exciting on this front except that the new iPhone 12 models now support 15W wireless charging, up from 7.5W in iPhone 11 thanks to MagSafe.
