Spotify Expands Group Sessions to Support Remote Sharing

Back in May, Spotify added a new feature called Group sessions that lets premium subscribers share live playlists. The feature allowed one user to act as a host, then others join by scanning a QR code manually to form a group listening experience. It allowed all group members to play, pause, skip, and even add tracks to an existing shared queue.

Recently Spotify has updated that functionality even further to favor remote sharing of live playlists. The added support for remote listening breaks the initial distance limitation in Group Sessions.

Group sessions now allows link sharing, so you can share and tune into the same playlist or podcast with your buddies who are miles away from you.

“no matter the distance—whether six feet apart or a thousand miles away—you and the members of your squad can now each listen to the same content at the same time on your own devices (as well as control playback),” says Spotify.

This feature is like watch party but for audio.

“Groups of two to five people can use this feature at once by sharing a “join” link via messaging apps or social media with each other,” Spotify added.
