Google Photos is set to turn automatic backup and syncing of media from messaging apps according to an employee of the company.

The reason behind this has to do with the current pandemic that has seen people share much more over messaging apps. With the pandemic still with us and restrictions not easing as fast as many had expected, Google is implementing these changes as a way to save its bandwidth resources that are strained at the moment.

Google will start notifying users of the changes when they open the app.

Due to COVID-19, people are sharing more photos and videos. To save internet resources, backup & sync has been turned off for device folders created by messaging apps like WhatsApp, Messages, and Kik.

Starting today, you’ll notice a message in the Photos App about this change. You can change this setting at any time.

Users will still have the option of re-enabling backup and sync. You can check your settings at Photos app > Settings > Backup & Sync. The previous backups will not be affected with these changes. According to XDA-Developers, the changes seem to affect specific apps namely Facebook, Helo, Instagram, LINE, Messages, Messenger, Snapchat, Twitter, Viber, and WhatsApp.

This update comes less than a week since the latest feature changes we saw rolled out to Google Photos.
