Instagram for Android finally working on app shortcuts

App shortcuts have been around since 2016 with Android 7.1 Nougat. Depending on how you use your device, you will realize that app shortcuts are either absolutely crucial or just unheard of because you rarely use them.

If you use them a lot, you will, however, realize that Instagram doesn’t have an app shortcut.

Instagram originally added support for iOS’s app shortcut equivalent with the launch of 3D Touch on the iPhone 6S in 2015. Now, hot on the heels of dark mode support for Android 10, it seems some people may also be getting app shortcuts. Just like the current iOS shortcuts, these give uninterrupted access to; Instagram Direct, View Activity, New Post, and Camera.

You won’t however enable Instagram’s App shortcuts through an update, which typically means that Instagram is enabling access remotely on the server-side, something which seems to be pretty limited as of this moment.

However, a quick look through the APK confirms that the names and icons for the shortcuts are present, along with the necessary declarations in the manifest. Facebook needs to work on app shortcuts too.

Be on the lookout for the shortcuts.
