Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand was created solely for launching both entry-level and budget-oriented devices. Last month, Redmi announced the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro, their latest addition to the excellent value for money RedMi Note series. The devices are yet to hit Xiaomi’s official store, but you can find them in alternative platforms like Avechi and Jumia.

Back to the entry-level devices from Redmi, the brand has announced a successor to last year’s Redmi 7A. The display resolution has been retained at HD+, but the display has been stretched a bit from 5.45 inches to 6.2 inches. The display is still an IPS LCD, but the company has included a waterdrop notch instead of thicker bezels on the upper part.

A waterdrop notch houses an 8MP selfie camera featuring HDR support. At the back is a single 12 MP F/1.8 Sony IMX363 snapper.

The battery is a massive 5000 mAh one with 18W fast charging, but Redmi provides a 10W fast charger out of the box. For a price less than $100, you get USB type C 1.0 reversible connector, Bluetooth 5.0 support and Gorilla Glass 5 protection slammed on top of the display.

On the internals, the Redmi 8A runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 439 chipset aided with 2/3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Like any of the entry-level devices, you can expand storage via microSD card. Some cool intriguing features about Redmi 8A is that the phone supports wireless FM Radio connection and is P2i splash-proof certified.

Out of the box, Redmi 8A uses MIUI 10 splashed on top of Android 9.0 Pie, but the company says MIUI 11 update will follow suit later.

Redmi 8A has been launched in India with a base price of $91(approx. Ksh 9500) while the 3/32GB variant goes at $98(approx. Ksh 10,200). The device will be available in either Sunset Red, Ocean Blue, and Midnight Black colors.

Just like its predecessor, we expect the Redmi 8A to sell locally unless otherwise.
