Yesterday, HMD Global unveiled its latest entry-level smartphone, the Nokia 2.2. We knew this phone was coming as the successor to the Nokia 2.1 from last year.

As expected, the Nokia 2.2 is an Android One smartphone and has a recommended retail price of $100, approximately Ksh 10,000. Keep in mind this is the recommended price in other markets and may be higher or lower when the phone is officially launched in Kenya. It comes with Android 9 Pie but support for Android Q is expected.

The Nokia 2.2 has a 5.7-inch display with a HD+ resolution. It also comes with a waterdrop notch that gives it a modern feel compared to other Nokia smartphones within this price. The notch houses the 5MP front facing camera. The main camera at the back is a 13MP one that is not a surprise as we get such cameras on most smartphones around this price these days.

Powering the Nokia 2.2 is the Quad-core Helio A22 processor with 2GB or 3GB of RAM and either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage space. As for the software, it is an Android One phone and this runs near stock Android. Expect very little bloatware and timely updates. This is what will make this phone stand out as most other smartphones within this price never get updated.

The Nokia 2.2 also has a dedicated Google Assistant button on the left-hand side, something we saw HMD introduce earlier this year at MWC. For biometric security, we only get face unlock on the Nokia 2.2 as it does not have a fingerprint scanner. I don’t get why this is so as I would prefer having both and in most cases the fingerprint scanner is way more secure than face unlock.

For the battery, the Nokia 2.2 has a 3,000 mAh one that to be honest seems small. Competitors like Infinix and Tecno have bigger batteries on most of their phones and I do not get why this is not the case with Nokia.

Below are some of the key specifications of the Nokia 2 2 highlighted.

Display: 5.71-inch IPS LCD display with 720 x 1520 pixel resolution
    Processor: 2.0 GHz Quad-core MediaTek Helio A22
    GPU: PowerVR GE8320
    RAM: 2GB or 3GB
Storage: 16GB/32GB internal storage, expandable via microSD card up to 400GB
    Cameras: 13MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera
    SIM: dual SIM
    Battery: 3,000mAh battery
Android: Android 9 Pie; Android One
    Size: 146 x 70.6 x 9.3 mm , 153 grams

At this point we do not know when the Nokia 2.2 will be available in retail stores in Kenya but I will update you on that if and when I have more information.
