Back in February, HMD Global unveiled the Nokia 8110 “Banana Phone”. If you know a bit about Nokia’s history, then you know that this phone was first unveiled years ago and the relaunch was for the true fans who liked the old Nokia and want something modern but still retro. The phone was never unveiled in Kenya when the company introduced the Nokia 6.1, Nokia 1 and Nokia 7 Plus not so long ago. I wasn’t expecting the company to unveil this phone in Kenya but it has finally done that.

The Nokia 8110 4G, also referred to as the Banana phone, is available in the country for Ksh 8,000. This is a bit too much even though the company may argue that its does support 4G. For that price, you could get a decent Android powered smartphone and clearly the company is not targeting such people with this price, it is focusing on those who want this specific phone, not as their main smartphone but rather as a second device for nostalgia purposes.

Speaking on this, Gopher Ogembo, Business Manager, East Africa, HMD Global said, “The Nokia 8110 4G delivers crystal-clear VoLTE calling and is perfect for anyone who wants an iconic 4G feature phone or a companion phone, with access to an app store for favourites like Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Search, Facebook and Twitter. Other capabilities of the Nokia 8110 4G include sending and receiving emails, importing contacts and syncing your calendar with Outlook and Gmail.”

The Nokia 8110 4G features the Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform that is designed to bring 4G LTE to more people through feature phones. This should be good enough for those who want the old Nokia and still get decent internet speeds. The phone also supports Wi-fi connections and Wi-Fi hotspot for easy sharing of your internet connection.
