Google: The Nexus 6P and 5X Don’t Support aptX Bluetooth streaming (A Feature That Will Be in Android O)

Android O will be released to the public in a couple of months and as usual, we are excited to know what it will offer and if we will be able to install it in our device. The one feature that Android O will bring is aptX Bluetooth streaming, a new proprietary streaming protocol that is aimed at providing better audio over Bluetooth.

AptX is owned by Qualcomm and the company says that it offers CD-like quality wireless audio. If you own the Nexus 6P or the Nexus 5X, you won’t be able to enjoy this though. Google has confirmed that the Nexus 6P made by Huawei and the Nexus 5X made by LG will not support aptX Bluetooth streaming.

This confirmation came from a Google developer who was answering a question by a user on the company’s Issue Tracker website. The user had created a report saying that the aptX option was missing on his device, the Nexus 6P. This is when the Google developer marked the bug as “Won’t Fix” as you can see below.

    Status: Won’t Fix (Intended Behavior)

Unfortunately support for aptX and aptX HD are not supported on Nexus 6p and Nexus 5X – only on newer devices.

At this point, we are not sure if this is technically impossible or Google is just unwilling to add support for aptX. Talking about this, AndroidPolice explains, “In a similar case, Google initially didn’t bring the Pixel’s fingerprint sensor gestures to the 5X and 6P, due to the older devices having older fingerprint sensor firmware. After a bit of public outcry, Google began evaluating if updating the sensor firmware was feasible, and it eventually came to the 5X/6P as part of Android 7.1.2.” This means that we may see aptX support in the future but for now it isn’t included.
