Huawei’s 2017 flagship smartphone, the P10, is finally available in Kenya. We have been waiting for this smartphone for ages and we finally have it in the country for Ksh 65,000. The phone was unveiled back in February at MWC 2017 and took ages to get here, even Samsung launched the S8 and S8+ in the country before the P10.

The Huawei P10 has been on pre-order since April, the pre-order window was to close on April 30. The phone did not get the usual treatment we expect for a flagship smartphone, it was quietly introduced to the market with just a press release. This sort of makes sense since it took Huawei this long to introduce the phone to the market and to be honest I did not expect much, the excitement I had about this phone died a long time ago.

Speaking about this device, Huawei Mobile Eastern Africa Managing Director Mark Hemaobin said, “The P10 is the epitome of our emerging premium category of our brands in this market and will help maintain our contribution to the growth in Huawei’s global profits.” When you compare the P10 with other flagship smartphones from other brands, you will see what he means. The device comes with specs you find on other premium devices but at a cheaper price, this is to target those who want a premium device but do not want to spend a lot of money on it.

The Huawei P10’s main selling point is dual camera setup made up of a 12MP and a 20MP camera. This is the same Leica branded camera we saw on the Huawei P9 last year. Unlike the P9, the P10 also has a Leica branded selfie camera with an 8MP lens.

Some other specs you can find on the P10 are listed below:

    Display Size: 5.1 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels

    Chipset: HiSilicon Kirin 960

    Processor: Octa-core (4×2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A53)

    RAM: 4 GB

Storage Space: 32 GB expandable to 256GB

    Android Version: Android 7.0 Nougat

    Network: Supports 2G, 3G and 4G

Camera: 20 MP + 12 MP at the back with a 8MP one in front

    Battery: 3200 mAh

    Aiming for 50% Market Share

This year, Huawei is aiming to increase its market share in Kenya to 50%. “The Huawei P10 is part of Huawei Mobile Kenya plans to increase its smartphone sales by 50 percent by end of 2017. This year alone, Huawei Mobile Kenya has launched mid-range phones GR5 2017, GR3 2017 following the P Series predecessor Huawei P9 and Mate 9 last year,” a statement from the company read.

This is a bold statement from the company that is not easy to achieve. With competition in the entry level segment from Tecno and Infinix and in the high-end segment from Samsung, Huawei isn’t going to have a 50% market share that easily. I will make sure I keep the company in check and by the end of the year be sure I will be revisiting this story.
