We have been waiting for Android Wear 2.0 for quite a while now and Google has disappointed us every time we thought the company was going to release the update. Some manufacturers are also waiting for this update before they can release their updated wearables. Since manufacturers are not willing to release wearables until Android Wear 2.0 is released, we are stuck with old wearables and most of the new ones that are released do not come with Android Wear.
For the true Android fans, Android Wear 2.0 is coming soon. According to The Verge, Google plans to release this update next month (February). Google has already sent out emails to developers advising them to update their apps as they get ready for Android Wear 2.0.
Google has notified developers that have unsupported Android Wear code to be prepared to update their apps or they may find the software unavailable in the Play Store when the updated OS is released. This means that Play Store apps that will not been updated by then will not be visible in the on-watch Play Store.
The company specifically wants developers to update their apps to allow them to run standalone mode. With this, the apps will be able to run independently and not connected to the smartphone.
The email reveals that Google will be releasing Android Wear 2.0 in early February. This will be before Mobile World Congress but am still not sure if we will be seeing new Android Wear 2.0 wearables at the event.
Google is also believed to be working on its own smartwatches, two to be exact. The company released its first smartphones last year and it looks like it wants to do the same in the wearable industry. We have seen manufacturers take a back seat in the wearable business as smartwatches are still not considered necessary products and consumers are not buying. With Google getting into the market, manufacturers may be encouraged to do the same.
