The Kenyan smartphone market is about to get exciting as Cubot plans to launch its latest smartphone, the Cubot Note S, in the country. This will be the global launch of the Cubot Note S and it shows how attractive the Kenyan smartphone is attractive to global manufacturers.
“Our Market research for Africa, pointed to a very high appreciation of our brand in Kenya which has also been driven by Kilimall. On further research we realized that many Kenyans are looking for high quality and affordable smartphones which are rare,” the company said in relation to the launch in Kenya.
The smartphone will be available exclusively on ecommerce website, KiliMall as from February 12. Those who can’t wait for this day to make their orders can go ahead and preorder it from midnight tonight (February 1st).
Cubot has still not revealed how much this phone is going to cost but it will definitely be affordable. The statement from the company reads, “We felt that we should reciprocate and create a phone that can deliver such a customized user experience, at an unbelievable price.” A quick search around the internet landed me on GearBest which lists the phone for $80 (approximately Ksh 8,200) and ships from February 15. If you do the math and factor in the taxes you can get an approximate retail price which am sure will be slightly above Ksh 10,000.
As to how and why the company’s products are affordable, Cubot’s Vice President Richard Meng had this to say, “Most phones tend to be expensive because most of the players in the smartphone industry retail chain are making a lot of profits. To enable us keep the price low, we have identified a strategic partner that shares in our vision for Kenya. Which is to make a difference in the lives of our customers, not just to make money. We are coming out honestly to tell our customers the true price of the phone, eliminating all channel costs & giving all the profit to the customer. Hence our exclusive partnership with Kilimall.”
