The Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch gets updated with a ton of new features

Samsung Gear S2

Samsung’s new smartwatch, the Gear S2, was officially launched a few month ago and the reception was good. The Gear S2 brought in some new design changes that made it more stylish and appealing.

Ever since it was launched, the Gear S2 has been available in limited markets and in Kenya, it was supposed to launch sometime this month but we still don’t have it. No news as to why it has delayed but my guess is that we will see it in the country before the end of the year.

Even before the Gear S2 rolls out to every market, Samsung has started pushing out firmware updates. The update is currently rolling out in South Korea where the smartwatch is currently available. Am sure Samsung will be kind enough to include these updates on all the new smartwatches to be released on the other markets it is not currently available in.

Some of the features this update brings include:

  1. ‘Add Widgets’ label: There’s a new ‘Add Widget’s label under the plus symbol, which makes the action easier to understand.
  2. Auto Open Apps: When you activate this new option, apps open automatically once you stop rotating the bezel on an icon.
  3. Vibrate When Disconnected: Under the connection settings, you can use this  option so that the watch vibrates as soon as it gets disconnected with your smartphone.
  4. Screen timeout options: 15 secs, 30 secs, 1 min, or 5 minutes.
  5. New apps: World clock, Starbucks, a navigation app (for South Korean), and Flipboard News Briefing app.
  6. New watchfaces: Nothing new, but the same watchfaces that were showcased during the device announcement.
  7. Notification Indicator: There’s a little orange circle that acts as a notification indicator. It appears only when notifications aren’t set to wake up the screen.
  8. Larger Notification Text: When you double tap on a notification, the text grows bigger so you can easily read the information. Also, when you swipe up from a notification to dismiss it, a trash can symbol appears.
  9. Notification Reply: A smiley symbol has been replaced with a simple and more traditional icon.
  10. Watch Face Template: When you scroll right from the watchface menu, you can use the ‘Add Template’ option to customise the watchface and save it as a template.
