Stanbic Bank Kenya has appointed Michael Mutiga as its new Chief Executive. This comes after regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).
Joe Muganda, Chairman of the Board at Stanbic Bank Kenya, said Mutiga’s experience across banking, investment banking and telecommunications positions him to lead the bank’s next phase of growth.
“Michael is a highly respected leader with an extensive and successful career in banking and finance, both in Kenya and across Sub-Saharan Africa,” said Muganda.
Mutiga joins Stanbic from Safaricom PLC, where he served as Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer. He previously spent about 15 years at Citibank, rising to Managing Director and Head of Corporate Finance for Sub-Saharan Africa. He also held senior investment banking roles at Barclays.
Mutiga holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Laws from Temple University.
“I am honoured and excited to officially lead Stanbic Bank Kenya,” Mutiga said. “The bank’s recent performance is a testament to the talented team and their commitment to our clients.”
Mutiga succeeds Abraham Ongenge, who had been serving as Acting CEO since March 2026. Ongenge will return to his substantive position as Head of Personal and Private Banking.
