NETSCOUT has announced an expansion of its Adaptive DDoS Protection (ADP) solution. This introduces new capabilities that enable service providers to automatically detect and mitigate outbound DDoS attack traffic.
The move comes as consumer broadband routers, cameras and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices are increasingly being exploited by botnets capable of launching large-scale cyberattacks.
Traditionally, DDoS protection has focused on defending the intended target of an attack. NETSCOUT’s latest update shifts that approach by helping operators identify and stop malicious traffic before it leaves their own networks.
According to the company, compromised subscriber devices are contributing to a new generation of high-volume attacks that can lead to network outages, increased infrastructure costs, damaged customer relationships and reputational risks for service providers.
The expanded ADP solution uses AI-powered threat intelligence to analyse large volumes of outbound internet traffic and identify attacks hidden within legitimate network activity.
Patrick Donegan, founder and principal analyst at HardenStance, said the combination of faster broadband networks and vulnerable IoT devices has created a new class of large-scale DDoS botnets.
“Source-side mitigation, or attack suppression as it’s sometimes known, is a critical part of the equation,” he said, adding that service providers need the ability to detect and stop attacks before they affect customers and the wider internet.
The company said its enhanced solution combines automated detection, adaptive mitigation, and real-time threat intelligence to help internet service providers identify compromised devices and suppress attacks at their point of origin.
“We are extending DDoS defence from the target to the source,” said Darren Anstee, CTO of Security at NETSCOUT. “By using our internet-scale visibility to derive localised threat intelligence for our customers, NETSCOUT can identify and precisely suppress attacks at their origin before they cause problems locally or at their target.”
NETSCOUT said the new capabilities are designed to help operators improve network resilience, reduce operational costs, and better protect customers as cyber threats continue to evolve.
