Google has opened applications for the Google Africa Applied AI Lab, a new initiative designed to help African founders and researchers turn AI ideas into commercially viable products while accelerating the continent’s AI innovation ecosystem.
Based at the Accra AI Community Centre (AICC) in Ghana, the lab will serve entrepreneurs from across Africa, offering technical collaboration with Google experts, early access to Google DeepMind’s latest AI models and mentorship from leading venture capital firms.
Google’s AI for Africa program will focus on five key areas where the company sees AI having a significant impact – the future of work, knowledge, software development, creativity and entertainment. Participants will work with Google teams to develop AI-powered solutions for African markets and challenges.
Selected startups will receive early access to Google’s AI models, including Gemini, Gemma and Veo, alongside technical guidance, go-to-market support and mentorship from venture capital partners such as 4DX Ventures, Norrsken22, Novastar Ventures, and Ventures Platform. Teams may also be considered for investment through the Google AI Futures Fund and participating investors.
Unlike many startup accelerators, participation in the Africa Applied AI Lab does not require founders to give up equity, and Google says startups are not required to use its AI technologies exclusively, although meaningful use of Google’s AI stack is expected during the program.
Applications are open until August 31, 2026, with selected participants expected to begin a co-development program running from mid-September through early December. The inaugural cohort will conclude with a Demo Day in Accra, where startups will showcase their products to Google leaders, investors, and ecosystem partners.
