Kenya’s digital government expertise is beginning to find markets beyond its borders, with Webmasters Kenya Ltd, the company behind the country’s eCitizen platform, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mozambique’s National Employment Institute (INEP) to develop the country’s national Employment Portal.
Under the agreement, Webmasters Kenya will design, implement and maintain the platform, which will connect job seekers and employers while providing access to employment opportunities, internships, vocational training, self-employment and entrepreneurship programmes through mobile devices and Employment Centres.
The announcement also is a clear trend that Kenyan technology firms are increasingly exporting digital public infrastructure (DPI) expertise to other African countries.
For years, Kenya has built a reputation as a fintech and innovation hub, but government technology is emerging as another area of strength. Platforms such as eCitizen have demonstrated how digital services can improve access to government services, creating capabilities that are now attracting interest from other governments across the continent.
Mozambique’s decision to use a Kenyan company is also shows a growing willingness by African governments to source technology solutions from within the continent and not reply exclusively on international providers. As governments accelerate digital transformation programmes, experienced African technology companies are becoming credible partners for large-scale public sector projects.
If more governments follow this approach, Kenya could establish itself as a regional exporter of digital government infrastructure, with local firms playing a larger role in building the digital foundations that power public services across Africa.
