Visa has announced the launch of Apple Pay in Mauritius. The service is currently available to MCB Visa cardholders, with plans to expand support to additional banks in the near future.
Apple Pay enables users to make secure, contactless payments in-store, within apps and online. Customers just have to double-click the side button on their iPhone or Apple Watch, authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode and complete transactions by holding their device near a payment terminal.
According to Yared Endale, the launch represents a milestone in Mauritius’ broader digital transformation efforts.
“The launch of Apple Pay in Mauritius is an important milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey and reflects the growing demand for secure, seamless and mobile-first payment experiences,” he said. “At Visa, we are proud to work closely with companies to enable globally proven technologies that are both trusted and scalable.”
Apple Pay also extends to online and in-app purchases on iPhone, iPad and Mac. This allows users to complete transactions without manually entering card or shipping details.
Security remains central to the platform. Instead of storing actual card numbers on devices or servers, Apple Pay uses a unique Device Account Number stored in a secure chip known as the Secure Element. All transactions are authenticated and are assigned a one-time dynamic security code. This is improitant as it helps reduce fraud risks.
Users can set up Apple Pay by adding their Visa credit or debit card through the Wallet app on supported Apple devices. The service will be available immediately when added and cardholders will continue to receive their existing rewards and benefits.
