Cards account for 63% of all digital payments Iin South Africa, while eWallet adoption continues to rise and cash usage declines.
Enabling a fully cashless system in emerging markets presents unique challenges. Platforms must split each fare between drivers and the company in real time, while ensuring drivers receive payouts through familiar and accessible financial rails.
This is where the dLocal–inDrive partnership comes in.
Through the new setup, inDrive can now accept local card payments directly within its app, automatically split fares between driver earnings and platform fees in real time, enable instant payouts using systems like PayShap and disburse driver earnings through domestic South African payment rails.
The move reduces reliance on cash, improving safety and lowering fraud risks for drivers. Cash payments will still be supported to ensure flexibility for users who prefer it.
What They Said
“South Africa is a key market for inDrive, and getting payments right here matters—not only for passengers who want a convenient cashless experience, but also for drivers who depend on fast, reliable payouts,” said Ashif Black. “dLocal gives us the ability to do both, in one integration, in a market where that combination wasn’t available before.”
“Making payments work in emerging markets takes more than a technical integration. It takes local infrastructure, local relationships, and an understanding of how money actually moves in each market,” added Barrie Swart. “This partnership in South Africa is a strong example of what becomes possible when all of that is in place.”
