Day 1 of Safaricom Decode 4.0 set the tone for what is shaping up to be one of Kenya’s most important tech gatherings of the year with artificial intelligence firmly at the center of the conversation.
From hands-on AI labs to high-level keynotes and live demos, the event brought together developers, policymakers and industry leaders to explore how AI will power Kenya’s next phase of digital transformation.
Opening the event, Safaricom’s Group Chief Technology and Information Officer, James Maitai, framed Decode’s evolution:
“What started as a platform to showcase engineering and build talent has grown into something more transformative, not just for Kenya, but beyond.”
He positioned Decode as more than just a conference by calling it a “movement” bringing together developers, innovators and policymakers to shape the country’s digital economy.
Maitai outlined how Safaricom is shaping what he called Kenya’s intelligent future, anchored on three key pillars:
1. Intelligent Infrastructure
AI is crucial and is evolving to be the invisible operating layer across networks and systems from smart homes to national digital infrastructure.
2. Fintech Evolution
Safaricom is doubling down on intelligent financial systems. It using AI to help with fraud detection, credit scoring, customer segmentation and data-driven product design.
3. The Creative & Gaming Economy
Safaricom is betting big on gaming, esports and immersive technologies targeting the young people.
AI Is the Next Industrial Leap
In one of the most defining keynotes of the day, Safaricom’s Group Chief Finance and Innovation Officer, Dilip Pal, described AI as Kenya’s next industrial revolution:
“Ten years from now, we may say this was when Kenya took its next industrial leap.”
He introduced the idea of AI as an “invisible operating layer” across industries powering everything from agriculture to customer service.
One of the standout moments from his keynote was a simple but powerful analogy:
“The ingredients are there. The recipe looks exciting. The chefs are talented. But the kitchen is not ready.”
His message was very clear, AI success isn’t about hype, it’s about readiness.

Safaricom’s AI Core Strategy
Pal also revealed Safaricom’s AI Core, built around five pillars. These are
- Trusted networks and data
- Agentic AI systems
- Operational intelligence
- Customer empathy at scale
- Open collaboration
“AI is not something you plug and play… it is something you build into how you work.”
Closing the keynote segment, was Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke emphasized that Kenya’s AI future must be inclusive and locally built:
“AI is not a single tool. It is an ecosystem built on data, infrastructure, skills, and governance.”
He highlighted key priorities such as expanding digital access to rural areas, building local-language AI systems, strengthening data protection frameworks and investing in talent and youth.
“Kenya’s future will not be imported. It will be built, governed, and scaled right here at home.”
Besides the keynotes, Day 1 leaned heavily into practical AI applications.
The day kicked off with a Google-powered AI lab, where developers explored rapid prototyping using Gemini, AI-assisted coding and debugging and cloud deployment via Google Cloud.
The event didn’t ignore the risks associated with AI builds with sessions like “Red Team Your LLM Before Someone Else Does” highlighting the importance of AI security, testing and validation and responsible deployment.
The one clear takeaway from Day 1 is that Kenya is not just adopting AI but is positioning itself to build with it, shape it and lead with it and thus we need adequate preparation to take advantage of this.
