Spotify has introduced Messages, a new in-app chat feature that lets users in Kenya share songs, artists and podcasts directly within the platform. This is not entirely a feature you expect on a music streaming site but I am really curious to see how it will be used. The feature is rolling out to both free and premium users this week. Spotify says the feature aims to make music and podcast sharing more personal and seamless.

With Messages, listeners will be able to send tracks to friends, react with emojis and chat right where they listen. Spotify is doing this to ensure you can do all this without switching to other apps

You will be able to access Messages by tapping your profile photo in the top left corner. Spotify will then suggest friends based on shared playlists, Jams or Blends.

“In Kenya, recommendations are social currency. Messages brings that local energy into Spotify so the right track, pod, or chapter gets to the right person faster,” said Phiona Okumu, Head of Music, Sub-Saharan Africa.

Spotify says Messages will complement existing sharing options on WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and other platforms. Users will also have control over privacy settings, including the ability to block, report or opt out of Messages entirely.

The feature is protected by encryption and proactive moderation tools to ensure safe interactions.

Spotify plans to expand and refine Messages across more markets in Sub-Saharan Africa in the coming months.
