Kenya’s electric mobility pioneer BasiGo has announced it has deployed its 100th electric bus. This marks a significant milestone as the company seeks to electrify public transport across the African continent. There is still a long way to go but this is a good start. The company can assemble 20 buses per month after raising KES 5.4 billion in funding.

BasiGo was launched in 2022 with just two e-buses in Nairobi. It now operates 100 electric buses across Kenya and Rwanda. This makes it one of the largest electric public transport fleets in Sub-Saharan Africa.
BasiGo’s expanding fleet is already making a measurable impact:
- Over 20,000 passengers served daily
- More than 1,000 jobs created across the e-mobility value chain
- 5,000 litres of diesel saved daily
- Over 250 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided monthly
“100 is more than a number, it’s a statement,” said the company. “Every electric bus proves that clean transport is not only possible in Africa, it’s scalable, profitable, and preferable.”
BasiGo’s e-buses are powered by East Africa’s renewable energy mix, enhancing their environmental benefit while reducing operational costs for transit operators.
The company now looks ahead with ambitious goals of 1,000 electric buses on African roads in the near future. It also continues to partner with local and regional operators, governments, and financial institutions to enable mass adoption of clean transit solutions.
